THIRUMAETTRALEESWARAR, OADHA URUGEESAR - KANCHIPURAM

This temple is in Thiru Mettrali Street. Thiru Mettrali – Thiru + Mael + Thali. Thali means temple. Mael means west. Since this temple is situated west to Eakambaraeswarar it is called as Thiru Mettrali. The Theertham is Vishnu Theertham. Vishnu wanted to attain Shiva saaroopam (the roopa of linga). Shivaa told him that he would attain the linga form when Thiru Gnana Samandhar attains this places and sings songs. When Samandhar came here and sang hymns on lord Shivaa Maha Vishnu who was listening melted to form a linga. Maha Lakshmi who was seeing this ran and hugged the feet of Maha Vishnu, fearing that he would become invisible. We can find the feet of Mahavishnu in front of this linga. The Shivaa which was worshipped by Vishnu is in front of this linga. The Vishnu (Oadha Urugeeswarar) linga faces east and the Shiva linga faces west. In this place Samandhar was called as Thiru Gnana Samandha Pillayaar and so this area was known as Pillayaar Paalayam. Thiru Naavukkarasar and Sundharar have also sung about this temple. This is the Devaara Paadal Pettra Sthalam.
