Once all the Devas unitedly wanted to attain fame. So, When they seeked Brahma for Advice Brahma told them to perform Yaaga, so that they could attain fame. After the Yaaga the fame transformed into a big marble mountain. Vishnu stole the mountain from them and conquered everyone who opposed him. He took away the Bow and Arrow from Indhra and stood near the bow. He used it to launch the arrow and for conquering everyone proudly. Indhra came here and installed a Linga worshipped Shiva and asked for help. Shiva suggested Indhira to transform into a small termite and cut the string of the bow. The string cut the head of Vishnu and he fell down. The Devas got back the fame after the act of Indhira. The shiva which Indira worshipped is Indhiraeswarar. As Lakshmi found Vishnu fallen down without life, she requested Shiva to give back life to Vishnu. After Vishnu was brought back to life He worshipped Shiva. The Shiva worshipped by Vishnu is called Kesavaeswarar. The Linga worshipped by Indhra in the form of a termite is Vanmeeganadhar. The termites together transformed into a burrow. Therefore Vanmeeganadhar is a Putru Linga. The Baana is tall and the Aavudaiyar is round in shape. The Theertham of this temple is Indhira Theertham. In ancient days this area was surrounded by trees. Later the temple was destroyed and only the Linga was found amidst fields. Now a small new temple has been constructed for Vanmeeganadhar.
